Dear family, friends, and community, I cannot believe it’s that time of the year already… Another year, another Cancer Fighters Toy Drive! It’s so cool to think how much the toy drive has changed but what hasn’t changed is the support we have received from every single one of you! This toy drive started in honor of my brother, Diego. Diego was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010. This was extremely hard for everyone in the family, as we had to watch my brother go through his treatments and endure so much pain. It was tough going to the hospital and hearing everyone else go through the same pain. As a six-year-old, I realized that some kids must spend Christmas in the hospital. So I came up with Cancer Fighters to the Rescue, an annual Christmas toy drive that has donated over 25,000 toys to the Children’s Hospital of Aurora! Unfortunately, my brother hasn’t been here to see how much the toy drive has grown; he passed away in 2016. It’s been hard for my family, but we know what Diego would have wanted, and he would want us to keep going. He inspired me to continue and keep pushing, and we are heading into the 13th year of this fantastic toy drive. I cannot express how thankful I am to keep this toy drive in Diego’s honor. Now, a minor update: I am in my sophomore year of college, and it has been going fantastic! With me being gone, it’s the second year I am introducing an ambassador for the toy drive. The ambassador for 2022 is Payton Lasecke! She is currently a high school Senior and is super excited to help us this year. So, once again, I am asking you to donate a NEW toy to the Cancer Fighters! Help me bring smiles to them in the hospital this Christmas! If you do not have the time to buy a toy, do not worry, you can also donate to the GoFundMe page and Payton and I will go shopping for you. The deadline for donations is December 17th. Thank you all for supporting this toy drive and keeping my brother’s legacy alive. This wouldn’t be possible without all your support! Remember, Kindness starts with you! Daniel Alvarado * We have a drop off location for the toy drive in the Byers Elementary school lobby. The last day will be 11-16-2022 11:00 a.m.*
